Azure Data Factory Copy Activity fails when copying to Dataverse/CRM (Dynamics)

Hi all,

I'm running an Azure Data Factory pipeline with a Copy activity ("Copy PR to PL") that writes data into Dynamics 365 / Dataverse via the Dynamics connector. The activity is failing intermittently with the following error:

Details:

  • Environment region: EMEA
  • This happens consecutively 2 weekly refresh

Questions:

  1. Is this a known/transient issue with the underlying Dataverse database (db_crmcoreemea_20201018_08470316_9faf on server spartan-srv-emea-crmcoreemea-dbb606f32d2a)?
  2. Are there any open service health advisories for this server/database in the EMEA region around this time?
  3. What's the recommended way to handle this?

Any guidance or confirmation that this is a known issue on Microsoft's side would be appreciated.

Thanks!

    Hi,

Such error can have several root causes, like
    • Invalid user credentials, maybe due to a changed password
    • Capacity limits, e.g throttling
    • Environment in maintenance mode
You can check if there is any update being installed or if the environment is in maintenance mode. In case the user credentials are OK, then you can retry it later.

This pipeline had been running successfully for the past two years. After experiencing two weeks of consecutive failures, it started working again without any changes to the credentials. We are unable to pinpoint the exact reason for the failures.

This looks like a transient Dataverse database outage in the EMEA region. The recommended and supported mitigation is to implement retry and resiliency patterns in Azure Data Factory, because these types of temporary backend unavailability events can occasionally occur and are generally resolved automatically after a short period.
