How to prevent serial numbers from being reused

Posted on by 459

Shouldn't AX prevent reuse of serial numbers when marking serial number control in the tracking dimension group? It prevents two items with same serial number to be put on stock at the same time, but if I take out the first item, AX lets me put a new produced item with same serial number (and item number) on stock again.

Hi Henrik, i have the same question.  If i make then ship a SN, i can make (and ship) the same SN again.  Did you ever discover an answer to this?

    Thanks

So do you think it will work if I activate registration for the items?

With "work" I mean, the system wouldn't allow any reuse of serial numbers.

It would work if you produce one item. Same as on sales and purchase lines... It is a part of the common concept of the inventDim, and controll is done on inventtrans. Items serial controlled will be split into multiple transaction lines.

Sales use picking lines, Purchase use registration and production orders use the prod journals for a 1:n registration.

Yes, I do create them manually.

Your solution would probably work, (check InventeTrans before putting to stock). I don't understand what you mean with the ProdTable control (I understand technically, but not the purpose). I have always wondered why there is a serial number field on the ProdTable. For me, serial numbers are identifiers that makes produced items unique. To put a serial number on the production order wouldn't make any sense. Just as the control that prevents two items with same serial number to be put to stock at the same time, but if you produce them at different times it's ok. Very strange serial number control functionality in my opinion.

So you create these manually for these items? You could create a simple change to the control when creating a serial number (or when writing to it on the ProdTable.InventDim) to check that it has not been used in the Invent trans with Type:Production. That would let you do what you want logistically with it, but not being able to produce the item.

    Hi Fredrik!

Yes of course that would be a problem, but I rather have a system that supports 99,9 % of my processes and stops me from accidently create two items with same serial number, than a system that can handle returns in a perfect way.

Our customer want us to deliver items with unique serial numbers in format TX-YYYYY where X is a number from 1-10 that represents a specified item in the construction and YYYYY is the id of the construction it self. This means that the combination TX-YYYYY cannot be reused. This rather complex serial number makes it impossible to use automatic number sequences which could have solved my problem.

If you make them your self, you could always use a LOT+SEQUENCE number to be created...

    Hi Henrik,

No it does not. You only want to make sure that you do not register the item multiple times or make sure you track the same item.

If you have a return order in the item or if you deduct it from warehouse by accident, shouldn't you be able to put it back to stock?

Is there a scenario where you would have to make sure that you do not receive the same item more then once?

    Hello Tomasz

That's what I did. It only prevents two items with same serial number from physically being put on stock at the same time, not reuse of same serial number at a later time.

    Hello Henrik

When you define Tracking dimension group     check serial number control.

    Best regards
