Dynamics365 CRM New Org Chart (preview) errors because of missing fields

Posted on by 13
Hi team,
I'm exploring a preview of the new Org Charts functionality that's going to go live this October.
The feature looks really good, but I have a problem I can't resolve myself.

1. When I try to build and org chart and put a contact as a subordinate to another contact, I get a generic error, and by reading the trace log I found that I'm missing /parentcontactid/ field on my contact (we are using custom /Reports To/ field instead). I can't simply create a parentcontactid field on my Contact entity as it still be created with a default prefix of my environment, like /new_parentcontactid/. Meanwhile the old Org Chart works perfectly fine and when I'm setting contacts in the chart, our custom /Reports To/ field is updated with a new manager. Any ideas how to change the behavior of the new Org Chart to work with the custom field?

2. In the new Org Chart functionality there's an option to update a contact if the contact left the company, by using /Verify Contact Details/ form. When I open it and click /Update Contact/ button - it returns an error that the field is missing (with no details of which one is missing, but I assume that's still this /parentcontactid/ field).

Any help on this topic is appreciated as I need to make sure once the new Org Chart is live it's fully functional.

Thank you!

    Hello @RudyZhang,

Thanks a lot for your reply. We already enabled it previously and have our hierarchy in place with all of the steps you described completed. Still the new org chart doesn't work on that relationship and our custom field (called "Reports To") - trace says the org chart requires system field called parentcontactid to build an org chart.

    Thank you!

    Regards,
    Ivan

    Hi,

Our team analyzed your requirements and according to the official documentation, if you want to use custom fields in your org chart, you need to create custom relationships.
    Here are some simple steps.
Step1, go to "Advanced Settings", select "Customize System", choose "Contact" entity, and create "1:N". relationship

Step2, select "Contact" as "Related Entity". Provide a name. Designate the relationship as "Hierarchical". Select "Yes" to "Hierarchical". Provide the display name of the access field.

Step3, Navigate to Contact > Hierarchy_Settings and click New

Then you can add "Parent Contact" field to forms

The above mentioned steps are only abbreviated, for detailed steps please refer to the documentation in the link below.
