Departments in D365FO

Hello,

We recently migrated to D365FO from a really old AX version. We assign departments to employees via "Financial dimensions".

My HUGE problem is that there are "Financial dimensions" in Employment tab, in Positions etcetc... and they are not linked among them. This means I could have in the system an employee of the Finance department but assigned to a position within the Marketing department for example. I don't understand how this is possible and how this can be avoided.

Any suggestion is more than welcomed!

Thanks,

Sabrina

    Hi Sabrina,

I'm not sure from which AX version you came, but there is a data model and feature change made on the financial dimensions as of AX 2012.

It is assumed that users will choose the correct values for a financial dimension. A worker could be assigned to multiple positions, so for this reason, there is no link out of the box. If you can't rely on the data entry from the user, you can consider a customization for additional validation logic.

    Hi Sabrina,

You dont need to assign department to an employee from financial dimension.  You have to create a position hierarchy and when you create a position then you need to link that position with respective department.

Create a position and link with department:

Link the postion with employee from "Working posiiton assignment" screen:

You can also assign financial dimension on position screen as well, in that case you dont need to change financial dimenson on every employee card specifically.

Forgot to mention that depending on the required purpose, you can setup the dimensions on the worker and position or only the worker or position.
