How do you get Ax to calculate sales tax on sales price PLUS freight ("misc charges")?

As I report to multiple states (and Canada) for sales tax purposes, some jurisdictions assess sales tax on invoice price plus freight.  My company recently implemented Microsoft Ax 2009, and I'm finding that it's not calculating sales tax on freight ---- only on the invoice price.

Can Ax be configured to calculate sales tax on just invoice price, or invoice price + freight, depending on the state the sale was made to?  Thank you for any help you can provide!

    Hi Chad.

This depends on how you are adding the freight charges to your orders.  Do you use misc charges?  If so you can setup AX tax to calculate on those misc charges.  I believe its either on or off so some custom coding would be required to not add on tax to the misc charge depending on the state.

    Hi Bob --

Yes, we use "misc charges" to add freight charges to orders.  As it is, I have the sales tax codes configured to calculate tax on "percentage of net amount". (As seen in General Ledger-Setup-Sales Tax-Sales Tax Codes...)

So do you know exactly where I would configure AX (what module/area) to get it to calculate tax on freight?

    Thanks again,

    Chad

Under A/R > Setup > MIsc Charges > Misc. charges code make sure that your freight misc charge has an item sales tax group assigned.  This will default the tax group when you add the misc charge on an order.  As long as you have your sales tax codes configured like you mentioned, AX should apply tax.

Of course use your test environment to make sure this works as intended before you deploy it in your production environment.

Let us know if it works!
