Update records from spreadsheet

Not really sure where to post this but seems like super basic functionality that I'm really struggling with.

I have a list of people that I would like to identify in Dynamics. Some are in the system already and some are not. I can import and create new records for anyone not already in the system. How can I update existing records based on some kind of field match with my external spreadsheet?

Example - import a list of contacts who attended an event. Some are in the system some are not. How could I match Contacts already in the system based on email address, and update a field on their record for anyone who exists in my spreadsheet?

Cross-post from this thread on the Customer Journeys forum; official documentation explicitly walks through importing a list of people to email (which is what I want to do) but gives zero guidance for what to do if someone is already in the system other than saying the provided instructions won't work.

What am I missing?

    Hey!

The link you've provided comes from "Customer journeys" which might not be the same used on importing data to contacts, accounts or leads.  ON this scenario, the best documentation is https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-apps/user/import-data.  basically:  you have an excel template that matches the table where you want to upload the data.  YOu need to establish the mapping of the fields and specially: Allow/Not allow duplicates.

Also, you have this option https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/set-up-duplicate-detection-rules-keep-data-clean to generate duplicate detection rules.  For example, if a contact already exists, then only update specific fields.
