D365 F&O - Automatic Split of Large Financial Journals
Can anyone explain how the Automatic Split of Large Financial Journals feature is expected to handle a journal that contains:

One balancing debit line (e.g. Accrual Control Account)
Tens of thousands of credit lines

For example:

DR Accrual Control £100m
CR 54k+ detail lines £100m

When the journal is split, does D365:

Distribute the balancing debit across the generated journals so that each split journal remains balanced?
Or is Microsoft expecting these journals to be constructed using Offset Account logic instead of a single balancing line?

We experienced voucher balancing errors during posting and I'm trying to understand the intended behaviour of the split process before concluding whether this is a data issue, a process limitation, or a defect.
Has anyone successfully used Automatic Split with a journal structured as one balancing line against many detail lines?

Hi,

I haven't used this feature recently. The largest journals I have seen a few years ago was with about 12000 lines. This was posted as one journal without splitting it.

I would expect that the split will not happen in your scenario. For performance reasons, I think it will be better to split it, but then you will need multiple debit lines and different voucher numbers.

My assumption was that the Automatic Split feature would preserve balancing by distributing the balancing debit across the generated journals.
Is it your understanding that the feature does not redistribute a single balancing line and therefore requires the source journal to be pre-grouped into balanced voucher groups before posting?
If so, do you know whether this is documented by Microsoft and is there an upper journal line limit?

Hi,

Voucher does never split. This means if there is a voucher (balance is measured per voucher), will create a journal but give error while exceeds the limit of lines.

Hi,

The Automatic Split of Large Financial Journals feature is designed to split journals into smaller posting batches, but each split journal must remain balanced.

For a journal structured as:

1 Debit line – Accrual Control (£100M)

54,000+ Credit lines – Detail transactions (£100M)

the feature does not automatically duplicate or proportionally distribute the single balancing debit line across the split journals. If the split occurs without corresponding balancing entries in each batch, voucher balancing errors can occur during posting.

In practice:

If you're using one balancing line against thousands of detail lines, Automatic Split is not well suited unless the split logic can keep each resulting journal balanced.

Microsoft generally expects journals to be structured so that each voucher or journal segment is independently balanced, often by using Offset Account functionality or by generating multiple balanced journal groups during import.

If you're seeing voucher balancing errors, it is most likely due to the split creating unbalanced journal batches rather than a posting defect.
