changing a series of dimension values

hi,

one of our customers wants to change a series of dimension values with the same dimension code (cost centre). a special thing is that there are a bigger number of blocks that should go in each case to only one new dimension value, e.g. some "old" dim. values "cost centre"/A1000 (A1000 means the value of field Code, the 2. prim. key), "cost centre"/A1001, ... should go to one new dim. value "cost centre"/100.

in general some dimension values are used in a huge amount of tables/records. after changing/renaming the data integrity of the dimension values should be as well es before!

it should be done in a CU or in a processing only report.

any ideas? thx

best regards

    Hi Jonathan,

this is probably a common issue, "every" customer with dimensions I have worked with has some cutomizations to achieve this. Generally, if you have no overlap (source value range and target value range are completely distinct) you can do this with a translation table and the RENAME function on T349 "Dimension Value". If everything is correctly linked (table relations are unmodified/correct for new fields), then using RENAME is the most reliable and probably the fastest way (can't believe it - relative to coding effort) to do this. If the source and targed value ranges intersect, then you need to do this with double renames.

Renames can take a long time in a NAV database, though. Therefore it is recommended to do this as a batch job.

    There are caveats, though:

    - You need to have access rights to all tables with dimension values. If you have a portion of data that can't be accessed with the used license, this could lead to an error.

    - All (I really mean all) tables must be compiled. Otherwise you will get an error on this table, leading to a rollback.

I have no "renaming toolkit" ready to publish it, though. Maybe you can find something in the mibuso downloads.

    with best regards

    Jens

    Hi Jonathan,

as long as you do a delete without calling the OnDelete() trigger of T349 "Dimension Value", this will work. Done it my self on occasions.

    Hi,

i think there is a dimension change tool available in NAV 2103 R2 but we suggest not to use it

    Hi Narayan,

As far as I know, there is no any such tool available in NAV 2013 R2 to update the posted dimension values in entries. (Replace existing dimension value with new one)

If you find it then please share that with us.
