Not found so far, what's the difference between: "Application Release"; "Platform Release"; "Platform Update"

Hello,

This may be a Captain Obvious question.. but..

In our LCS hosted environments we can see details like those shown below: Application release (##.#.##), Platform release (#.#.####.###)

pastedimage1682002678490v1.png

Then from Microsoft we receive emails that contain references to this: Proactive quality update... Platform Update ## (##.#.####.###)

What I take from this is a hierarchy:

Application Release is at the top

Platform Release is the first level of granularity below the Application Release

Platform Update is the second level of granularity below Application Release.

Or put another way it's like an odometer: |(Application Release)|(Platform Release)|(Platform Update)| where the items on the right will increment faster than items on the left.

Do I have this correct?

    Hi Mohit,

Sorry, I was off for a while.

Yes, you explained it yourself in the previous version. And you are right, it is a bit confusing, lol.

I had to quickly check for such mail and I found one that I received on the 20th April and it reads.

A new proactive quality update release for service update 10.0.31 or Platform Update 55 (10.0.1406.165) is scheduled to begin for all qualifying environments.

It should be "A new proactive quality update release for service update 10.0.31(10.0.1406.165) or Platform Update 55  is scheduled to begin for all qualifying environments. ", according to this url.

Agreed Mohit, and as the discussion progressed I suggested above:

"Here's a refinement of my question then... why does Microsoft choose to confuse things by describing an update as follows, keeping in mind the current version numbers I list above:

Microsoft Update email text:  "A new proactive quality update release for service update 10.0.31 or Platform Update 55 (10.0.1406.165) is scheduled to begin for all qualifying environments.""

Hi Jim, 10.0.1406.165 is product version and 7.0.6651.122 is platform version. You can check it from F&O URL (on top right cornor, click on ? its next to settings icon. Then click on About). Also you can check it from LCS environment, if you scroll down and check Available updates

    Hello Komi,

You're knowledgeable as always!  Please follow my reasoning below where I refine my understanding but point out a question about how MS communicates pro-active quality updates.

After reading the links you've provided I'll correct my original understanding posted above to:

    • Application Version is communicated in two levels of detail: General Application Version (Specific Application Version). E.g.: 10.0.31 (10.0.1406.139)
    • Platform Version is communicated as a Platform Update General number (Specific platform version). E.g.: Update55 (7.0.6651.122)

Microsoft Pro-Active Quality Update Releases act on the Specific Application Version.

Here's a refinement of my question then... why does Microsoft choose to confuse things by describing an update as follows, keeping in mind the current version numbers I list above:

Microsoft Update email text:  "A new proactive quality update release for service update 10.0.31 or Platform Update 55 (10.0.1406.165) is scheduled to begin for all qualifying environments."

See here they've conflated the Platform Update General Number (Platform Update 55) with the Specific application version (10.0.1406.165).

When I read Platform Update 55 (10.0.1406.165) My brain says -wait a minute, isn't the platform version at Update 55 (7.0.6651.122)?? Why is it suddenly 10.0.1406.165?

I could make a suggestion to Microsoft I guess to make these emails just a bit clearer.

    What do you all think?
