Extending the life of GP, SL

Hi everyone, I’ve been wondering how others are approaching the challenge of extending the life of their ERP systems, specifically Microsoft GP and SL. With technology changing fast, how are you managing to keep these systems up to date and running smoothly without a full system overhaul? Any tips or strategies you’ve found useful?

    Hi Holly,

Really appreciate your insight! You’re absolutely right—GP reaching end of life is a big concern, and it’s definitely making a lot of companies rethink their approach. A full migration isn’t always feasible, so I’ve seen many businesses look for ways to extend the life of their ERP while they figure out the best long-term plan.

Like you mentioned, partnering with a third party can make a huge difference, especially for smaller IT teams. I work with field service companies and many are layering in modern tools—like mobile scheduling, dispatching, and real-time data access—to help keep things running efficiently without a complete overhaul.

When you were managing GP, did you find that updates and support were the biggest challenges? Or was it more about keeping up with the changing needs of the business?

Would love to hear what worked best in your experience.

    Thanks,
    Trevor

    Hi there!

I was an IT admin specifically over our organization's ERP for many years. This is challenging for sure! As soon as I felt I had a good footing - the technology changed and it was difficult to stay on top of all the needs from end users, support, and ensuring the tech was upkept.
Be aware that Dynamics GP is reaching end of life (articles below).

I think the best approach, especially for smaller IT depts. like mine was - is to partner with a third party to help manage upgrades, updates, migrations, etc.

By collaborating with a partner, you can develop a tailored migration strategy that minimizes disruption and maximizes the benefits of the new system. This proactive approach will help you stay ahead of technology changes and ensure your ERP system continues to support your business needs.
