RSVP instead of Event Registration

How could we get RSVP created as a purpose for Events? This is similar to Event Registration however RSVP would be better when the invitee wants to notify the sender they can't attend an event. Is this possible?

If there was a RSVP option, would invitees get also removed from the mailing list/segment and thus don't receive /annoying/ emails reminding them of the event they have declined?
