Without knowing your exact hardware and software setup it is hard to provide straight recommendation.

If SQL server stays the same, and you only discontinue the AX AOS, you need to make sure that the Kernel version of the executables are exactly on the same patch level. Once that is verified, you simply need to repoint the Database connection of the AX AOS server configuration to the Production instance's SQL Server instance and Database(s), then start the AOS service.

You have to make sure any additional setup are carried out for the new AOS instance, like if you have any changes in Ax32serv.exe.config, add the SSRS server in the Reporting services configuration in System administration for the new AOS, allocate Batch groups and mark it as batch server (if that is the one running batch jobs), and so on.

Why would you bother with export and import? I see a plenty of risk with it. Moving whole databases, or maybe even the whole DB server, is both easier and safer.

Deepak, do I understand correctly that you want to move the DB server only and then connect it to an existing AX environment?

By the way, don't forget that the architecture of development servers usually isn't suitable for production environments.

Thanks Martin  for your quick reply.

I know its risky thing but now i need to do that thing for one of my client.

For your information whole application i need to shift from production to Development Server,After every thing transfer from production server will no more exits.

Now  development server will be work as production server.

I didn't say you shouldn't do it; I said you shouldn't use import and export.

When you want to more "whole application", what exactly does it mean? Don't forget that we know nothing about your system, except of what you tell us.

whole application means I want to say that whole DB Data as well as whole application including the custmization because as per client last some time he didnt use the Development server.

just i want to know how will transfer the whole DB Data as well Application data will transfer to the Development server, then development server work as like production server.

In AX 2009, code is stored in .aod files (and labels in .ald files) in the application folder.

If your other environment has the same version of standard AX code, you may want to take just your customizations, such as the CUS layer (axCUS.aod) and your labels (e.g. axXYZen-us.ald).

By the way, you should at least have a copy of .aod and .ald files you installed to production, if you're not using a proper version control system.

    Hi Martin.

    Thanks Martin.

Please verified me if i wrong for following step that I am going to follow up.

First i will stop both server AOS.

I will copy of Application folder from Production server then copy to development server.

Restore the database of Development server from backup of production server.

If any thing need to more Please suggest me.

    Regards

    Deepak

I can't answer that - I would need much more information. Here are a few things you should consider:

    • Does the other development server use the same AD account as production? If so, it was very unsecure, but it will the move easier. If not, you have to update permissions in database. I would install a new AOS and chose the restored DB during installation, so the installer would configure it for me.
    • Consider which other components you use - Enterprise Portal, SSRS, web services on IIS... and move them as well, if needed.
    • If you've other DLLs into client or server bin folders, don't forget to copy them as well.
    • Consider what data won't in the restored database isn't valid in the dev server. For example, if you want to use another Enterprise Portal, you have to change the setup in AX.
    • Plan what to do with batch jobs. Make sure you stop all of them before backup and restore, but you still may need to updated AOS ID of batch tasks (either setting up them again, or using a script).
    • After restoring DB, don't forget to set up backup plan and maintenance plan.
