Linking Item Numbers

I want to be able to link a discontinued number to a new item number. So that when our order desk staff enter a discontinued item number on the order form it automatically prompts them to the correct live item number. Is this possible?

You can work with item substitution. Follow www.archerpoint.com/.../item-substitutions-microsoft-dynamics-nav

Agree with Jonathan, item substitution would fit the most (msdn.microsoft.com/.../hh168426(v=nav.90).aspx). On a sales line there can be Substitution Available field.

The item substitution does not work if the discontinued item is "blocked" is there away to use item substitution without "unblocking" the discontinued item

I think you might need to go for small customization for auto populating the new item number after old item no enter.
