Defining the Serial Number at registration but not updating the InventSerial table - AX2012 CU3

Hi

I am using AX2012 non-R2, CU3. I have the ability to generate a pick for a sales order for a serialised item. My dimension group allows blank receipt and issue.

When I go into the item registration I can type in the serial number, the system accepts this and writes the serial number to the item transaction.

However it has not populated (and I did not) the underlying serial number table (InventSerial).

What are the repercussions of this?

I do not have negative stock selected but I have on the dimension group blank issue and blank receipt selected, and I have the physical stock checked. I also have serial number control checked to ensure it is a true serial number.

I can see no real repercussions to it not being in the table, as I am only ever defining it at pick. I can track it and it is written to each transaction. Is there anything I am missing?

    I believe this might cause issues in all lookups related to the InventSerial.

    What happens if you try to sell the item and want to use the Invent Serial Lookup in the sales order line, for example? It will be empty, no?

    It is never in stock until it is registered out, so the lookup at sales will be blank. There is the return to consider, but in essence the entry is only at the point it is sold, so there is no InventSerial ID lookup, the outbound has the transaction entry and the trace works.

    Wondering if I am missing anything else. I think not. Seems wrong to do it, but is a requirement I am investigating.

    Okay finalising the issues as:

    1. On hand screen will show inconsistencies at a serial number level (blank in and actual out).

    2. Direct delivery unknown serial numbers fail on the receipt as this posts the shipment, not really an issue but the concept was to book in "phantom" serial numbers and rename later (which means you need to create it in the InventSerial table).

    Seemingly no other major processing issues. In R3 it seems the approach has potentially altered with the tracking dimensions being divorced from a supporting table.
