How does Power BI Sync work into D365?

We have a dump of GL data from Dynamics 365 Finance 10.0.10 into a BYOD SQLserver instance in Azure. That works fine.

I have a custom report based on that GL data that was produced in Power BI Desktop using DirectQuery, which i've then published to PowerBI.com. Then shared the view with myself and colleagues that they pick up from planting the results of "Open Reporting Catalog" on one of their D365 workspaces. All good so far.

However, we now have a situation where the entity is refreshed on the BYOD server at 11pm every night, and I schedule a refresh of the PowerBI view at 5:00am the next morning, And yet some users are finding the data doesn't get updated in their views. For example, we're just coming into Period 11 of our FY and I have some users who can't even see any transactions in May - even though they are sitting there in the BYOD database. I can see them all if I go into from PowerBI,com directly. But if I go in via the D365 workspace, Period 10 is completely missing - with no filters applied at all. Click on "Open in PowerBI" and I get the exact same, with no Period 10 transactions showing at all.

If I go into Power BI Desktop and refresh the model and publish, that works and May's transactions are there. But the D365 Finance workspace version doesn't move an inch, even a day later.

So, how does this flow from PowerBI.com up to Dynamics 365 workspaces go? Pulling my hair out trying to isolate the root cause! Any help, advice or guidance most welcome.

    Hi Ian ,

Did you embed this report in power BI workspace ? Only report made out of aggregate measurements refresh automatically  when you schedule refresh in your AXDW DB in the workspaces . If this is a custom report which is made  based on BYOD data workspace version is not going to be refresh automatically.

If you embed your report in D365 F&O and trying to get the data from BYOD, i don't think that is possible. You need to create aggregate measures\dimensions for embedded Power BI reports.

    Hello,

although I haven't tried this myself, on PU 33 I believe the ability to embed full power apps and web pages was released as a preview feature. I think you can embed the powerbi report as a webpage link and it will be refreshed once it is refreshed in the powerbi service.

there are 2 hops of data in your case

    1) D365FO to BYOD

    2) BYOD to PowerBI

    pls tune then and suggest

D365 to BYOD works and the whole database table is there.
BYOD -> PowerBI.com -> D365 Workspace is the piece that breaks. Okay in PowerBI.com but doesn't refresh into the workspace reliably.

    Hi Ian ,

I already gave you answer in my earlier reply. Reports developed in powerBI.com using BYOD are not going to be refreshed automatically in the workspaces. That is not supported. You have a option of using AXDW instead , reports developed and embedded using AXDW should refresh automatically in the workspaces.

This should be much better experience in the future when below features becomes available and evolve.

Thank you. Surprised as it's been working fine until last month, but when I surface (we have a major incident at the moment on MFA failing on Excel connectors following a certificate refresh), i'll try the AxDW route :-)
