When you install NAV from the demo DVD, if you want to attach the NAV database to your existing SQL Server you have to restore the demo database from a folder like

    \SQLDemoDatabase\CommonAppData\Microsoft\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\<NAVVersion>\Database

Thanks for your help,  I have a question, I understand I need the demo database to implement Dynamics 2018 or Am I wrong? I am trying install Dynamics 2018 without demo database but I have received error messages regarding database. I restored the database to my SQL Server but when I try to connect by windows client it display that database is not Dynamic Database, any ideas?

It depends on your requirements. You can start by restoring the demo database to your SQL Server (in this way you have a NAV db with a demo company and with data and setup) or you can simply install the NAV Development Environment and from here connect to your SQL Server and create a new database and a new company. In this way NAV creates an empty database with all the structure.

To add the existing database on DVD:

Hi Stephano, thanks for your help, whe I try to create a new database on my new SQL instance I receive the following error message:

PS C:\Windows\system32> New-NavDatabase -FilePath k:\temp\BKPDemoDatabase\DemoDatabaseNAV.bak -DatabaseName navdatabase -databaseinstance newnavinstance -databaseserver mydbserver  -verbose

VERBOSE: Performing the operation "New-NAVDatabase" on target "DatabaseServer =mydbserver, DatabaseInstance = newnavinstance, DatabaseName = navdatabase".

VERBOSE: Restoring database 'navdatabase' from backup file: 'k:\temp\BKPDemoDatabase\DemoDatabaseNAV.bak'...

New-NavDatabase : The database restore operation failed due to the following error returned by SQL Server:

Directory lookup for the file "D:\JobWS\2523101\NA\LocalOutput\Demo Database NAV (11-0)_Data.mdf" failed with the operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.).

File 'Demo Database NAV (11-0)_Data' cannot be restored to 'D:\JobWS\2523101\NA\LocalOutput\Demo Database NAV (11-0)_Data.mdf'. Use WITH MOVE to identify a valid location for the file.

Directory lookup for the file "D:\JobWS\2523101\NA\LocalOutput\Demo Database NAV (11-0)_Log.ldf" failed with the operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.).

File 'Demo Database NAV (11-0)_Log' cannot be restored to 'D:\JobWS\2523101\NA\LocalOutput\Demo Database NAV (11-0)_Log.ldf'. Use WITH MOVE to identify a valid location for the file.

Problems were identified while planning for the RESTORE statement. Previous messages provide details.

    RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

I don't know if I can use WITH MOVE from NAV Administration Tool Shell, when I use from SQL Server New Query I can restore the database but when I want to open the database with NAV Development, it send me a message The database is not NAV database it will not be open.

    Christian,

Instead of choosing the demo option, install the individual components and specify you SQL Server and database when installing the other components.

    Hi Suresh,

I tried to install the individual components but when I install the server component and I specify the database instance of my SQL Server Standard, the server component install the SQL Server 2016 Express Edition instead, and it does not recognize my SQL Server 2016 Standard instance to create the database. It is very frustrating.

I installed the NAV Development Environment in my Database Server (Production) and now my SQL Server Standard was recognized. When I installed NAV Development Environment in another Server distinct to my database Server it not work. Now I have assigned the instance that I created for my production environment but the database created by Dynamics (supposedly not demo database) has the Cronus Company tables. Now I am trying to learn how can I create a new database with another company with empty tables.

    Thanks for your help.

I have created a new database and I connect my NAV instance to new database but I received the message "Object of type CodeUnit with ID 1 could not be found". What should I need to do now?

Open the development environment and compile the codeunit 1. if that does not resolve please compile all the objects.

A NAV database can have more than 1 company. From NAV you can open the dB where you have the Cronus company and here create a new company called as you want. NAV will create the table structure for you. Than you can delete the Cronus company. No need to create N separate database for that.
