Enabling Pin or Unpin records in timeline for all users

Posted on by 5

Is there a way to enable this experience to all the users not the ones having Write/Delete access?

Pin or unpin records in timeline

If your administrator has enabled the pin setting and you have write/delete access, you can quickly access records, such as activities, by keeping them at the top of the timeline. Pinning a record eliminates the need to scroll through every record to find the one you need.

By default, you can pin notes. The activities that you can pin depend on how your administrator has set up the feature.

Pin a record by selecting the pin icon next to it. This moves it to the top of the timeline in the Pinned section, where it can be quickly accessed. The Pinned section also lists the number of records that are pinned. You can pin a maximum of 15 records. Records that are pinned will stay at the top of the timeline for a year unless you unpin them.

I found it.  In your Security Roles, you'll need to go to the Custom Entities tab, scroll down to Timeline Pin, and then check the circles for Create, Read, and Delete.  (This is what the Basic User Security Role has which when given to our users they could see the Pin.)  Because it is set to Organization, anyone can see the pinned item in the entity timelines.

I have the same issue where only some users can see the new Pin icon.  I see that you have to update the msdyn_customcontrolextendedsettings table, but I can't find where that is.  I have looked at all of the permissions for the security roles, and I don't see this one.  I see Customer Control, Custom Control Default Config, and Custom Control Resource.  I turned on the Create and Write ability to Organization, Saved, then refreshed my environment, but no luck.  I also see that my Member's privilege inheritance is Direct User (Basic), so I would have thought that would be all that was needed.

     Note

If you have a system administrator or basic user role, the pin and unpin settings work by default. If you don't have either of these roles, you must have Create/Read/Write privileges to be added to the msdyn_customcontrolextendedsettings table for these settings to work.

    Hey!

From a functional point of view, you're "viewing" the activity history.  But if we think about it from the logic running behind this, when you pin a record, you're modifying the behavior of the activities (by marking those particular activities with more priority instead of sorting them by creation date or modified date).  This is why you need Write permissions.   And when you unpin, you're modifying the behavior (again) by deleting the prioritization rules behind.

This is why Write/delete permissions are required.

    Hi,

What specific access do users need to pin/unpin records in timeline? Write/delete access to Activity entity?

    Hi Partner,
Unfortunately, we can't achieve it, which is by-design.
I hope you can verify my answer if it helps you! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
