local VM for DEV

Hi

I wanna download a VM for development on-premise. As I thought this could be done in LCS in our Project at the Environments part by clicking the plus-sign and select locally...but this option is not available. I am just able to ask for a new cloud hosted DEV machine to be provisioned

Can anyone help me out here?

I have the same question (0)

In LCS, go to Asset library - Downloadable VHDs. Then import the VHD parts into the library. Then you can download them.

    Hi CRSW,

You can download a OneBox VM for Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations in LCS -> shared asset library.

I do see some VHD's in that list, but the latest one is FinOps8.1, there are supposed to be newer ones right?

Also I do not see an option to import VHD parts any where, does that mean I do not have the right access rights in LCS?

8.1 is the latest major version of D365FO. Microsoft doesn't publish new VHDs for every minor update. But you can install updates manually on the VM.

Seems you found the VHDs so I assume you have enough privileges to download them. In Asset Library - Downloadable VHDs you see any VHDs that someone on your project has imported from Shared Asset Library. So if you see files there, you can download them by clicking the file name. If you don't see files in there, you can click Import to pick files from Shared Asset Library.

Shared Asset Library is the place where MS puts these files. Then LCS users can import what they need into their local (LCS project specific) Asset Library.

Yes I already have the Virtual Machine running with version 8.1, but how do I update it to the latest version?

It seems that to download updates from LCS, I need a project that has an environment attached, but I see no way of attaching my local environment to my LCS project.

EDIT I might have found how to do this, so forget this post

Did you look into the Shared Asset Library for updates? I think you can find the PUs and also monthly app updates from there. Go to Asset Library - Software Deployable Packages and click Import to see what's available.

You can't attach local VM into LCS. On the other hand you can deploy one Azure hosted VM with little or no cost. Then you can use it's update tile to get different update packages.

If you deploy one D12 VM and keep it turned off, it costs less than 20 EUR per month. If you have an MSDN subscription, you might have 50+ EUR monthly Azure credit "for free".

Do you need to install all updates, or just the latest one?

All updates are cumulative in 8.1+

Hi if I use just such a VM it is not in LCS. How can I attach it to get the updates.

On this page there is a description how provision add a local machine in LCS but I have no such option available.

    Does anybody this?

    docs.microsoft.com/.../access-instances

You can't connect a local VM into LCS. Instead you need to download updates and install them manually on the machine: docs.microsoft.com/.../install-deployable-package

The doc about "adding a local machine" is outdated. You need to download it from the Asset library like described already in this discussion.
