AX 2012 R2 : How to manage multiple locations in an industrial environment

Hi,

I have some interrogations regarding the best practices to manage multiple locations in an industrial environment. Our company don't have a megastore to stock all the products but have many smaller store in the plant where we stock the products. The problem is that we also have some inventory at workcenter.

I wish to know what is the best way to manage this situation so we won't have only one location that stock all the products in the system but on the floor there is 2 or 3 locations because it will be a nightmare for the inventory process and the cycle count.

Thanks a lot

The inventory dimension in AX2012 have Site, Warehouse, location, and pallet as storage dimensions. So there's native support to show which location stocks are located. Is that what you're looking for?

I've tried many configurations with the inventory dimensions and I can't a solution that works. Maybe we don't use them properly but there is more details. We have the following ''locations'' on our plant :

    1) Megastore : place where the materials are stocked in general. This is the bulk locations of our shop in AX words.

    2) Production line A : Where we manufacture some of the goods. Production lane A stock a few days to a week of materials.

    3) Production line B : Where we manufacture some other types of goods but we are using the same materials. Production lane B also stock a few days to a week of materials.

Both lines are refill by the megastore. Problem is, we don,t necessairly want to mange in-house transfer since everything works with manual Kanban. The other problem I face is that we want to see all the possible locations in the inventory reports (not necessairly the actual on-hand at each location but at least see the the three possible locations).

    Thanks for your help.

I assume you are working with AX2012 R2. If your company is investing into AX, it is worth to check out the Kanban support it has. I don't have a good grip of that but there are resources online:

    - blogs.msdn.com/.../lean-manufacturing-for-microsoft-dynamics-ax-2012-event-kanbans-the-single-piece-flow.aspx (from DAX Manufacturing R&D team blog)

    - technet.microsoft.com/.../hh352218.aspx (Kanban and Pull-based manfacturing whitepaper)

(After all Manual kanban comes with its own set of challenges, worth check it out to see if it can bring any additional value to your business)

On the other hand, please excuse me if I understand your statement wrongly. However, the stock movement (including in-house transfer) have to be recorded in the system somehow before you can generate correct report from the system. And I bet it's covered by the Kanban support in AX.

    Cheers.
