Hello,

is there any tool converting fob file to text (split them to objects) or vice versa - merge the text to one single fob file?

Thanks :)

Why you want to convert fob to txt? You can export objects as txt file (you need to choose 'Save as type' as *txct). You can modify it and import after that as txt, as well. But, you have to compile these objects.

text files are comparable, when I export one file for each object, and becomes complicated to hanlde when I have several objects.

I just need attitude (simmiliar to dynamics ax) to export and import as well.

awhat is the best practice doingo that?

    Thanks.

    Hi Eitan

Have you tried using the Developers Toolkit?

There you can compare several versions, and merge code. Not quite like the layered technology like in AX, but still with a pretty good overview, allowing you to merge into a new object.

I have 2 blog posts on my blog that might help you.

    Splitting txt files:

    Combining txt files:

I also show the file splitting in my latest video:

    Hi Eitan,

almost... I have only one the NAV Development Environment that can export (and import) objects as text. Depending on the license you have this works nicely (but not always).

Then there is NAVObjectSplitter (on mibuso) to split/join .txt-based object files. Combine this with FreeCommander, a few batch scripts, and a revision control system like SVN or Mercurial, and you have a pretty effective (or so) source control system. That's the setup I'm using. It requires quite some discipline, though.

    with best regards

I think you've hit on the biggest issue...it takes discipline and a built structure which may not exist at a customer or partnersite.   As fobs are the lowest common denominator it would be REALLY useful if there was an easy way to get those into a source control or management tool without all of the effort required now.  There isn't even a way for us to build tools to do this in VS given the structure of the fob file sadly.
