Best way to move Dynamics GP (Data and Server)

Our company is planning to move our core IT infrastructure from our headquarters to one of the other locations (another province). What is the best way to have a seamless move of data and server for Dynamics GP? Is it replication?

    Hello Ariel:

That is a huge undertaking. This has been well documented in the community. Here is a link to one

    Best of luck

Are you physically going to move all your servers and workstations and the rest of your network infrastructure to a new location or are you going to be moving the GP databases and SQL to new servers? In the end will this new location be the only source of data or will the old location still be in use? KB878449 will be of great help if you are moving data to a new server. As far as moving everything over you must first conquer the network and security issues and join this domain to the new domain. There is much to consider here so I would talk with your IT staff.

Indeed so many options in this day and age.

Whichever you choose it should be easy to achieve a seamless move with enough planning and testing.

I don't think there is a right or wrong way to do this, it depends on so many factors specific to your use and IT environment and skill sets of the people involved in the project.

Enjoy it, sounds like a fun project to tackle.

It is a huge undertaking. I've moved Dynamics GP before to a new server but this one is moving it out across offices physically that's why I'm leaning towards to some sort of replication between the current office and the new one. Then just pull the plug on the current office and use the new office so that downtime is minimal. I'm the only one involve(FUN) in the project but I might include our Dynamics GP solutions provider to help me out.

If you have the luxury of having a new and old server at the same time, you can do  a test migration to the new server complete with data and users and reports then when the time comes to move all you need to do is backup your data on the old server and get it onto the new server and restore. All you would be doing here is rotating the data underneath an existing GP installation. I do this all the time and very rarely run into issues.

When you come to recreating SQL Logins and Database users and ensuring the correct dbo and permissions, these are all tasks that GP Power Tools' Database Validation was created to do. It can fix these issues plus many more quickly and easily.

I complete concur with David. GPPT is the way to go for this task and many others!

Both Richard and David provide get solutions and suggestions.  It is our experience that the planning and execution of the planned move are of critical importance.  As Richard noted, if you can set up the new site in advance and do some test moves that is by far the best way to go.

Once you have committed to a date for the move, then stick with it, plan up to it, test prior.

    Ariel,

    Follow KB - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/878449/how-to-transfer-an-existing-microsoft-dynamics-gp,-microsoft-small-business-financials,-or-microsoft-small-business-manager-installation-to-a-new-server-that-is-running-microsoft-sql-server

I have used several time and successfully moved Database to new server with user logins. Yes you need to reset password but login Id it keep same.

Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks much

Sandip, fixing the logins and passwords with GPPT is much easier than the scripts and manual steps in the article. The rest of the article is great.
