Relationship between Profiles, Roles and Permissions sets

Please pardon me, I have done some reading up on MSDN library and Roberto Stefanetti's blog post on Roles, Permissions and Profiles but I am still confused.

Question 1: Can we assign Permissions Sets to a group of users so that we do not need to configure every user one by one.

I read Roberto post which states that permissions are mapped to users by design in NAV. Permissions sets & roles aren't linked objects in NAV. This got me confused, because in all Microsoft products we have been taught the AGDLP model. That is user goes into groups and groups goes into the permission. Assuming we have 1000 users, are we going to assign permissions one by one?

Question 2: Does it mean that Profiles and Role are controlling what users see, permissions is what they can actually write to the database? So Profiles and Role Center are related, but permissions is independent?

Profiles

Definition: Profiles are collections of Microsoft Dynamics NAV users who share the same Role Center.

A Role Center is a home page in Microsoft Dynamics NAV for all users of a profile.

For example, the Order Processor Role Center has been configured to reflect the tasks and priorities of an order processor.

I like to add a point. According to MSDN how to assign users to role. While this pertain to 2009, why does it says, Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 provides a set of standard roles. A role is a set of permissions for a set of objects in the database. Yet in 2005, Profiles/Role are not linked to Permissions? Is there an official authoritative answer?

    Hi Colinkgl,

I think you already read these articles:

    Managing Permissions and Permission Sets.

    Profiles and Role Centers.

    So:

    - A Permission Set is a set of Permissions for a set of objects (Permission Set is Role in version 2009 and earlier).

    - Profiles are collections of Microsoft Dynamics NAV users who share the same Role Center. Each Profile has to link to a Role Center page.

    - A Role Center is a type of page on which you can place different parts (User Interface).

    - There is no place to directly define relationship between Permission Sets (NAV Object Permission Background) and Profiles (User Interface). They belong to a User (a User has multiple Permission Sets and one Profile). However, they should be aligned when design according to Roles of Users. For example, we design SALESMANAGER role: Permission Sets should include Customer, Sales tables; and Profile with Role Center page should include Customer List, Sales Documents List, ...

    To handle thousand users:

    - Use PowerShell and Excel together.

    - New-NAVServerUser.

    New-NAVServerUserPermissionSet.

    Khoa,

When you say:  "For example, we design SALESMANAGER role: Permission Sets should include Customer, Sales tables..."  does that mean that Permission Sets can be assigned to Roles? Where?

    Thank you,

    David

    Please check this article

    www.catapulterp.com/permissions-in-nav-2016

You can create User Group and assign permissions.
