Large number of invoices

Hi all!

I have a question related to the performance and speed of operations in NAV, in the case of a large number of transactions. I could not find a topic on this subject in the forum so please direct me if I have missed.

We have a potential client that wants to, at the end of the month, generate, post and print a large number of invoices, but I wonder whether the NAV is right solution for this. I found a lot of documents and forum topics related to NAV performances, but I have never found the informations about testing results of creation/posting/print of certain number of recors.

In particular, I would like to know:

- How long will it take to run the procedure that creates 500 000 sales invoices (each with 5 rows)? What about 1 000 000?

- How long will it take to post 500 000 invoices (each with 5 rows)?

- Is there any number of transactions that should be the limit for NAV and beyond which you should not go with this solution?

I understand that answers depend on other factors (hardware, for example) but it would be vary helpful if someone had the expirience with this amount of records or point me to some materials where I can find more specific information on the duration of such activities.

Thanks in advance!

    Hi MDix,

I have personally not posted this large amount of records at once. It seems insane, i found a link that claims that NAV is not ideal for this mammoth record size.

there are other comments as well which might be useful to learn what Microsoft is doing with its latest release to tackle this issue.

Wow 500000 Invoices, i am not sure if that is real number but that is very big, there is no specific time assigned for a process and there are several variables involved, like for example posting are there any other add-ons invloved which are doing processing or modificaitons which handles other validations or processing .  Just for sake even if we think posting a sales invoices takes 3 seconds for the number of invoices you mentioned it will take days to post and process those number of orders.

    Hi

The posting of invoices generally depend on the hardware and the customization did in posting routine. If any customization done in posting routing and if that was not properly handled then it will definitely cause slowness in posting and will degrade the performance.

It also depends what types of the invoices you are posting - is it just a G/L transactional invoice or item ledger also is involved. E.g., with item ledger it would take longer time. However in your case it is most likely a service company (e.g., billing service) that processes just G/L entries - right?

We have had experience with billing companies with older versions of NAV. To my experience, 60.000 journal rows were posted within around 25 minutes. Under your conditions, it might take from around 10 hours to be posted, which can be actually suitable.

Of course, a lot depends on the equipment. Also, you might not necessarily need to post all your invoices in one night - you can post them in parts within the next month unless your reporting period ends; if you need printforms, you can get those from the unposted invoices; etc.

I have done a similar implementation (at least close to). We had to post around 30000 invoices at the month end. This is directly posting to G/L accounts and no item ledger entries linked.

It took around 2 hours to complete. As everyone said it all depend on how the hardware configurations been done and changes to the posting routine.

    Hi Suresh,

client currently has hundreds of thousands of users and growing, so I would like to know the possibilities in case that this increase actually occurs.

Yes, the process of posting would probably laste too long ...

    Hi Amol,

Thank you for the answer. My question was related to standard NAV, without any customaizations, because it is a potential customer and I need to point out potential problems ...

    Hi Alexander,

Yes, it is a service company - on invoices lines it will be resources, not items.

Example that you mentioned is very acceptable - if it is possible to record 60.000 journal lines for 25 minutes. I will try to automatically generate and post a large number of identical invoice and I will see what are the results of the test :)
