Clarification on Data Migration and Database Import

Hi everyone,

I am setting up a new D365 F&O Dev VM and I have some confusion around the following points, I would appreciate it if someone could clarify:

1. What is the difference between Data Migration and Database Import?

2. If I create a new Dev VM, what exactly do I need to do to get my data into it?

3. What is the difference between importing a database from an old VM vs starting fresh without an old VM?

Please share detailed practical steps if possible, not just theory.

Thanks in advance!

    Hi @Raed Salah Bzour

Before answering into your question, could you please let us know where you want to get the data into your dev VM?

Usually, we will copy the data from Prod -> UAT -> Dev, for this we have set of different approach.

    Hi ,

    Thank you for your response!

I would like to understand all possible cases:
    1. If the data is coming from an old Dev VM to a new Dev VM
    2. If the data is coming from Production to a Dev VM

For each case, could you please walk me through the full flow step by step or give me blogs for the full flow? I am still learning and I want to understand the process from start to finish, not just the theory.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi @Raed Salah Bzour

    Thanks for the clarification.

Please find the below information and I have attached a link as well for your reference.

    1.  We can copy DB using .Bak file and this can be done using SSMS.
    2. Please restore the data from Prod to sandbox first. once it's done. please take a backup from sandboax and restore the same in your dev environment using script.
