Data Migration from Open VMS or other open source ERP systems?

As I am 100% familiar with the link below, I was wondering if most of the community is using DIXF as a primary tool to import data into AX from other ERP's?

Does anyone have any experience importing data from an open source platforms which do not run on relational databases? I am wondering how involving is it usually to clean up data and get it ready for the migration?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

    HI Jack,

DIXF is indeed recommended to use. There are partners who created an add-on or ISV solution to be able to do the same. If you can use DIXF and the standard entities, this would be the most cost effective way. Otherwise you need to buy additional software and then.

DIXF has a lot of standard entities. If you need additional entities, you can create them using a wizard.

In fact the source is not important. If you have a file or ODBC connection you can configure it in the processing groups. You only have to make sure you provide the correct information. I have done some migrations of legacy systems. In some cases data needs to be collected and manually prepared to get it into the correct places. E.g. a legacy system had a manager field on an employee. In AX2012 we had to create positions and the position hierarchy.

    Hi,

I already have made a few data migrations from VMS and I it can be painful.

The biggest issue in data migration from unstructured systems is data cleaning.  Data was exported into Excel spreadsheets, manually manipulated .  In some projects, were created some tools to help users cleaning data before final import.

    Andre, thank you as usual.

Nuno Maia, do you by any chance remember which entities were the most problematic to clean up?

It will be quite difficult to point a particular entity, but from previous projects I would mention G/L Balance. For example, some of those legacy systems don’t have the concept of balance per currency. Customers had to open a G/L account for each transaction in a particular currency having massive chart of accounts.  In a project the legacy ERP didn’t had AP module, so the customer had a G/L account for each vendor.

In Dynamics AX you don’t have those requirements. Meaning that those customers reduced the number of G/L accounts and created mappings between the old system and the new one.

This is are a few examples, but it depends a lot of the customer.
