How to use LODs in Guides?

Hi,

we are working on a Guides project which involves showing an entire system with all sub-assemblies.

We use 3DS max(witjh babylon), Blender & Pixyz for DCC pipeline.

while testing in Hololens 2 we found that any guides step exceeding approx.200k tris lags in performance(for our scenario).

Is it possible to implement LODs in Guides 365 using the GLTF features?

If possible, please give us some hints how we can do this!

Hi Komaru, as noted by Ken, for now you will need to optimize your models prior to uploading into Guides. We are looking at LODs on our roadmap.

    Thanks Ken,

Alternatively will try to split the details with trigger Steps. Only problem is that, we have 8 slots & very limitted to Trigger placements.

    Komaru,

Since the hardware (Hololens 2) spec's have not changed, any improvements in Guides in regards to handling of 3d models would be software based, which has limitations. Which means this basic breakdown of 3d model/scene size should still hold true:

Since it all comes down to computing power "3d model" creation/display (aka LOD)  will always be second place because of the power required by an HL2 to do spatial mapping.

Which is a long winded way of saying until a Hololens 3, 4, or 5, there will be significantly reduced levels of 3d model detail that the 3d model industry is accustomed to whether in Guides or any program running on an HL2.

    • I have argued in the past Microsoft should do a HL2.5 where the compute pack is upgraded with a better processor/memory while display technology is improved over time.
