Explanatory materials for setting up carriers and container tracking numbers?

I'm tasked with integrating our postal service's barcodes onto our packing slips to give each shipping container a tracking number. Either by implementing it myself or handing it off to external devs. I've noticed there already is a field for container tracking numbers. But I have yet to find a document that explains how to set up and use this feature.

Can anyone here give me some explanations or point me towards documentation that's useable without already having expert knowledge about the whole system?
