D365 Workflow changing the selected entity when the workflow is saved

Posted on by 10

I'm seeing some really strange behavior when setting up a workflow.

I have 2 customer lookups on an entity, i.e. CustomerA and CustomerB.

When update the Entity using "Set Properties" I select the CustomerA entity and map a value on the form to a field on CustomerA it displays correctly in the workflow.

When I then go back into the "Set Properties" to check the value it remaps the value to the other customer lookup, CustomerB.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

I've figured out how to get the workflow to work as expected but it relies on a lot of trial and error.

It seems to be that if you have two Customer lookups on your entity it will duplicate the fields when setting up the mapping, i.e. you see 2 "Account Name" fields etc. When you select the field to map (i.e. "Account Name", D365 will show the entity name of the entity you selected, but this will be reverted once the workflow actin is saved. So you have to go back in and select the other copy of the "Account Name" field.

It's a shame that the original entity from the entity drop-down isn't being retained, and I guess that the age of "classic" workflows is coming to and end, so MS might not be all that interested in fixing this.
