Change ax2012 installation directory

I am trying to find some way to cleanly move our dynamics AX installation directory to our local G drive from our local C drive. We are not allocated much space on the C:\ drive and we're hoping to increase performance by using a drive with less outside I/O.

What would be the best way to go about this?

I've tried installing a brand new AOS alongside our current one, but there is no prompt to select the file location. These are just automatically installing to the same location as our current AOS. (eg. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics AX\60\Server\[AOSname]).

I've also completely uninstalled every AX component and I still didn't get the prompt for the file location. I'm guessing this is getting stored in the registry somewhere, but not exactly sure where to look.

Has anybody ever had to change the AX directory? Any ideas?

I believe you are on the right track about why you can't get the location prompt, my guess too would be its stored in the registry since its already been installed.

However, I have a question about what you are trying to accomplish to "increase performance". There isn't that great of amount of file I/O that i can recall that occurs on the AOS. Pretty much all of the performance would be CPU/RAM on your AOS, and RAM/CPU/File I/O on your SQL Server.

For example, we noticed we could cut our full compiles down from 3 hours to 1 when switching our SQL server to be installed on a SSD. (I believe just moving the DATA folder would work as well)

You can change the default install dir in the registry.

It's less for the performance and more for space/best practice. It shouldn't have been installed on our C:\ drive so we just need to move it. Thanks for the numbers on the SSD switch, though. I might be able to make that happen since performance has been a hot topic lately.

There were many registry entries that contained the value of the dax installation folder...wasn't able to pinpoint which entry to modify, but I didn't really look for too long. I was actually able to get the filepath prompt in the installation wizard after removing the "Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Setup Support Files" using Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs.

FYI, I was getting errors when logging into DAX due to an invalid directory structure after I reinstalled the AOS on another drive. The server directory is actually stored in the config (.axc) file and needs to be modified in notepad to reflect the new filepath.

    Hello Kyle!

I was able to change the entire AX folder just stoping the AX Services and copy/paste into another disk. of course you need to change, create, something using Server Configuration Utility.

Hey. I changed the installation path in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Dynamics \ 6.0 \ Setup \ Components \ InstallDir. Then reinstall the AOS. However, when the DAX started, I see broken labels :(
