Batch Job Issues

Hi All,

I was wondering was there a way of checking the health of batch jobs running and sending an alert if it's needed.

For example I have a couple of jobs which on a normal day, can take 5 minutes, but some days never stop executing.

It would be great to get a warning about this, as it can hold up jobs coming after.

An email would be ideal !

Thanks in advance,

Declan

You could create a batch job that monitors batch jobs. Or you could do an SQL Server Job activity doing the same.

Both of them could read the Batch.Status and BatchJob.Status field, which contains the value of BatchStatus enum whether they are waiting, executing etc. You also have the actual start date+time recorded in the database as well.

If you create a baseline table with your BatchId's and their average running time, or if you just calculate their average runtime based on the BatchJobHistory and you compare current date/time against their start time and set a threshold when to send you the notification (i.e. average is 5 minutes but has been Executing status for +2 minutes, send the mail), it could be easily done i.e. by db_sendmail in SQL job, or by SysOutgoingEmailTable in AX.

To be honest the best approach is not the above 2 ways, but by using a monitoring tool that is dedicated for this task. AX has a module for System Center Operations Manager (SCOM), that has a Long running batch jobs alert out of the box.

    Hi feelyd,

You can setup email alerts for each batch job you running (System Administration - inquiries - batch jobs , click top action pane - alerts) tick the tick boxes with statuses you require.

Also make sure you add an email to your user.

    Regards
