Video Recording of a call with HoloLens 2 fails once Remote Assist call begins.

Posted on by 62

Hello,

I have been attempting to video record a Remote Assist session using the HoloLens 2 OS video recorder...  versus the RA

Teams cloud based video capture [i.e. which splits video screens with the expert on the call]... however, once the RA call

begins... then the HoloLens 2 video recording stops.  Has anyone else encountered this?   and if so, what was your solution?

Note: According D365-RA site, it should work!

Use the HoloLens OS to record only what you see in the HoloLens, what you hear around you, and what you hear through the HoloLens speakers

Use this option when:

  • No call participant can initiate a cloud-based call recording
  • You only want the recording to capture what you see through the HoloLens. For example, the recording will only show the participants in the Remote Assist call if you manually navigate to the participants panel and it is in your field of view.

I forward a thanks!

P.S.  If anyone also might know if it is possible to change the Teams setting for video recording... i.e. so that it only records the HoloLens scene, and does not split it with the Expert on the call in the Teams App... that would be very useful as well!

    Sophia,

    Thank you for your response.

Re: "Does the same issue occur if you start the call first, and then start the OS recording?"    Well, that would then mean there is no captured video footage by the HL2 of placing the call to Teams... i.e. which is what we already have.  The D365-RA app has it own video record feature (i.e. after the call is placed)... which is then saved by the Teams session after the call.

The ideal solution is to have the HL2 OS record everything that user is experiencing... i.e. which includes the launching of the DA365-RA, so that the video then makes better sense.

That said:  Another downfall with allowing the D365-RA to record in Teams, is that it "splits" the video screen with the User in Teams and that of HL2 (see below).  Thus, rendering the video very useless... i.e. since instead of seeing the entire HL2 video recording (which already has the same video of the Teams user)... screen space is wasted with redundant footage.

    Hi KerwinK,

Sorry you've been experiencing this issue. Does the same issue occur if you start the call first, and then start the OS recording?

And unfortunately, Teams does not provide the ability to only record the HoloLens scene. You may consider asking the Teams desktop user to record their screen during the call: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/mixed-reality/remote-assist/record-calls-hololens#ask-a-teams-desktop-user-to-use-the-windows-game-bar-to-capture-a-screen-recording-of-a-remote-assist-call-from-their-perspective
