Inclusion of weekends and holidays for leave and absence not working as expected

We've enabled the 'Inclusion of weekends and holidays for leave and absence' feature and set a leave type to 'include weekends'. We thought this feature meant you could have certain leave types that were allowed to include weekends, however as the weekends are closed days on the working calendar it errors when requesting leave. 
 
Has anyone got this feature to work or have we missed the point of this feature? If it doesn't allow you to request leave on weekends on certain leave types only, then what is the purpose of this feature?

    Thanks Judy, however we did read and follow all the instructions on that page, both those mentioned features are turned on, and the setup was completed according to the info in that article.
     
    As it hasn't worked I'm trying to figure out if we have therefore misunderstood the purpose of the feature. To us the purpose indicates that you can put leave requests in for hours on weekends which are in the working calendar as closed days. I know that sounds strange but we're trying to use a leave type to record employees volunteering that they do outside of working hours. However we're just getting the message that you can't enter any hours for the weekend days presumably because they are closed days on the calendar.
