Changing SQL sort order

(0) ShareShare

I have done a few sort order changes in SQL many years ago using the BCP method.

I remember reading somewhere that this now must be done by Microsoft support in order to be a supportable process.

Is this true?

Thanks

Tom

Supportable by whom? I do not believe Microsoft certifies that if they perform the process it will be 100% correct.  They simply have much more experience doing it but there are plenty of partners who have done this.  Doing a bulk copy in and out of SQL is not a GP only process. It can be performed on any SQL database. If you need the scripts let me know.

Richard, thanks for the reply. Please send me the scripts, when you get a chance. It's been probably 15 years since I did this and no longer have those resources.

Richard is correct. While we offer SQL Sort Order Changes as an advisory service, we don't state that if it isn't done by us (Microsoft Dynamics GP Support) that it isn't a supported environment.

At the same time, if the sort order change is done incorrectly and causes issues and errors within the GP application, we would most likely require an advisory service to fix the issues.

    Thanks

No need for Scripts. You can use SQL Server Integration Service's wizard to move data from one table to another. Changing SQL Server's sort order pretty much requires you to reinstall SQL Server anyways.

Mariano, the scripts move every GP table from one instance of SQL to another. So in the old instance is the old collation sequence and in the new instance is the new collation sequence. Since the scripts build all the scripts for you I would find using the scripts to be a lot easier. We all have our preferred ways of doing things and oft times whatever we learned first is what we will continue to use.  Not to mention you get old like me and you are resistant to change.

I have no problem with old or new methods, just saying scripts are not needed if the environment is reinstalled and tables are SSIS out from one server to another :-). In other words, simply offering an alternative.

Hello Richard, If you are still in possession of these scripts I would love to have them. Thank you very much!
