Error when merging parties: Cannot edit a record in Memo

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi all,

We are in development for AX2012 R2 and I want to make sure that users will be able to do data cleanup like merging party records in the Global Address Book.  But whenever I select two records and click Merge Records, the merge validates but I get the message:

"Cannot edit a record in Memo (DirPartyMemo). Name:[Party Name].  The record already exists"

It makes sense that the record exists; that's the whole point since I'm trying to merge it with another record, both of which "already exist"... So any ideas on why this error is being thrown?

Yes!  That did it!  Thanks so much.  We weren't previously using the Lifecycle service, but it was a huge help here. I copied the changed code from the hotfix over to our system and now merges are working.

    Hi Ted,

The issue is already known and a hotfix is available. You can find details in Lifecycle Services:

    fix.lcs.dynamics.com/.../2905709

If you don't know about Lifecycle service, read this blog first:

    blogs.msdn.com/.../using-lifecycle-services-to-download-hotfixes.aspx

You can also download the fix directly with help of this link:

    support.microsoft.com/.../KBHotfix.aspx

    Good luck!

    Thanks Andre,

The manual option doesn't really work since I want normal users to be able to perform the task.  So I tried changing that unique index on DirPartyMemo to AllowDuplicates, which didn't change the behavior at all.  Guess I'm stuck with this unless I can figure out a bug fix.

    Hi,

The table method "merge" is used, where normally related tables will be updated with the new main record reference.

The table DirPartyMemo has an unique index on the field Party. So when changing the old to the new it will find a duplicate and raises the error.

This seems to be a bug.

A possible workaround is manually merge the Memo fields and delete the empty prior to merging the parties.
