Hi All,

Is it possible to export/import data from D365 Finance & Operations on Azure and an on-premise SQL server?.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks!

    Hello AX Ankit,

The cloud and on-prem versions have a data management workspace that you can use for exporting and importing data.

    That's a standard functionality.

For additional information, please check out the respective MS docs websites.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi Ludwig,

Thanks for your response. But what I meant was a bit different.

I have an D365 fin ops instance which is  on Azure. I want to export and import data into this instance from a SQL server which is hosted on premise.

    Hi Ankit,

Have you looked into that article: "...Copy database from a OneBox environment to an Azure Sql Environment" (https://blog.johanpersson.nu/?p=2754)?

    Hi Ankit,

If you are looking for entire DB move, see link below:

If you are looking to move partial data, use Data management to export from azure DB and then import via DM in on-premise environment. You can't do any data movements directly through SQL.

    Hi Satish,

Let me explain the scenario with an example.

I have CustGroup table in D365 instance on Azure and I have got another table 'CustomerGroup' in a SQL server which is on premise. I want a real time integration between these two tables. So, if a new record is created in 'CustGroup' table in D365 , the data should flow to 'CustomerGroup' table in SQL server and vice versa.

There is no solution for bidirectional integration between D365FO and external SQL database

You can export data entities to BYODB. But only Azure SQL is mentioned in the docs. OnPrem connection will work, some people have tried it, but since it's not officially supported it could break any time.

    docs.microsoft.com/.../export-entities-to-your-own-database

The other direction you would have to implement yourself, and you need to use data entities, not D365 tables. Any conflict management and other problems of bidirectional integration you would need to handle yourself.

    Hi Nikolaos,

Yes, BYOD is supported with Azure DB. But it's only an export option and cannot be used to import data back to D365. Further, the challenge would be then to transfer data from Azure DB to on premise SQl server.

So does it mean this feature is not supported as of now?

Yep, there is no feature that would support the requirement that you described.

The next question is - what is the actual business requirement? So far you described a technical wish where you could have a two-way sync between D365FO and your own database. But I'm sure there's some business requirement behind that, and perhaps it could be resolved with another technical solution.

    Hi AX Ankit,

You can create an integration with help of e.g. Azure service bus and web services. To be able to do the on-premise part, you can read some documentation or get some help on the Azure community forum.
