Is sharepoint Needed with dynamics AX? ECM discussion

?Is purchasing sharepoint strongly recommended if using AX?  Are there other ECM solutions?

What things can sharepoint do that AX cannot that makes it neccessary?

I believe sharepoint foundation is free?  So any of the non-free versions I want to know if its needed with AX

What customizations are done on AX and what are done on sharepoint.  Thanks for any links or explanations

This is a great question.  I use SharePoint as a core repository for all our Org's content instead of Silo'd information.

    Hi

Firstly, in a Dynamics AX installation, SharePoint is optional, so you can reach the main AX features without it.

As you said, exist the foundation version that is free and allow you to use Enterprise Portal, store documents to a SP Library, activate the Role Centers, etc.

Obviously, with the Foundation you have some limitations, i.e. to create a Power View report that displays data from an analysis cube, you must install SharePoint Server

I believe you do get SharePoint Server CALs with every AX user.... but please check up o that.

Document handling in standard AX is kind of limited, but serves its simple purpose  Documents are related to the single record, and you need to get to it to see of there actually are attachments or not.

We've created som extensions to it for our customers in our default framework which among other thing gives you a drag and drop feature to any record type.

There are some extended features in CRM and Manufacturing execution. You also have some "portal" functionality in project and some other areas where you get dedicated team sites.

All of this is within your standard SharePoint Framework.

Some ISV solutions are on market.

I only know of Axtension ECM which is kind of an expensive solution, but also caries a large value-add.

Axtension ECM has an ingenious way of handeling documents. Move away from the old folder structures or broad metataging (document type carries ALL metadata required) and move in to a relational document handling. It is SUPER efficient to find related documents by using the power of operational data.

Example for a Project scenario: You can store your user manual or safety sheets documents by only metadata tagging your item. With a single click get ALL documentation delivered through item transactions (sales orders, purchase orders or production orders) for that project.

Axtension ECM is worth a look.

any updates to this?   we are still looking for a third party solution to do sophisticated ECM/EDM responsibilities.  Additionally, we have solutions outside of AX that need to have documents saved in a nice orderly way as well

We need to save documents coming through/from AX, and through other solutions we have.  Sharepoint doesn't seem to be very good at EDM, thanks for your suggestions.
