How To Connect OnPremise NAV to PowerApps/PowerBI Content Packs

Having problems creating a connection to NAV on-premise in PowerApps and connecting to any of the NAV PowerBI content packs. Am getting authorization errors.

  1. Does anyone know if the NAV instance/service have to be configured with the NavUserPassword authentication in order for this to work?
  2. Does the data gateway have to be installed on the server box with NAV (it is NOT but SSL is all set up, I think correctly).

I have been trying this for days and our NAV is set to WIndows authentication. Outside the firewall, I can (1) use the Get Data command to connect PowerBI to the NAV data, can also (2) use the NAV Webclient in a browser and (3) can use the Windows 10 client app and successfully connect to NAV data. However, if I try to create a Connection in PowerApps or use 1 of the NAV "content packs" in PowerBI, I get authentication issues trying to connect to the on-premise NAV data. We are using NAV 2016 on-premise (hosted) and appropriate OData and SOAP ports have been opened

Just read the post: https://dynamicsuser.net/nav/b/peik/posts/setting-up-powerbi-online-with-dynamics-nav-docx?tempkey=9b8c06ed-9be3-4716-8528-ff1ab28181be#

In it the author mentions that "The DynamicsNAV90_NUP service has been configured with the NavUserPassword authentication."

Could that be due to using NavUserPassword vs Windows authentication?

For you to have the PowerBI Going you have to do the following

    1. Have a NAV Service tier using NavUserPassword as the Credentials Type, certificates involved, remember to grant the NAV Service account access to the certificate
    2. OData on the service must be configured and must run on the host names matching the certificate name if SSL is enabled, recommended
    3. A account using NavUserPassword must be setup, generate a Web Service Key for later use in Gateway Data Sources
    4. Test to see if OData can pull through data via a Web browser, use the Web Service key as password instead, not the password
    5. Install the On premise data gateway not in personal mode
    6. once the gateway is installed change the service account to domain if in a domain environment, also remember to add the new account to the Perfomance Log users group, also remember the Log on as a service on the local server and grant it access to the certificate (this is done via the computer certificates mmc under personal>Manage private keys..something like that)
    7. now once the gateway is running log on to powerbi online
    8. under gateway you should see the newly installed gateway
    9. Add data sources accordingly, use the OData URLs from the service using NavUserPassword, make use of the Web Service key as password

Dynamics NAV 2016 is not supported with PowerApps as one of the requirements is ODataV4 which was first provided in NAV 2017. The following blog has further information:
