Production Pick with Warehouse Picks (how about overpicking)

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi

With each manufacturing implementation where i have implemented Warehouse Picks (Direct Pick and Put-Away = Yes on Location Card), clients have requested if it is possible to over pick and leave it in the PROD-IN bin for next use.

Imagine; you have a raw material that is purchased in 25kg bags - for certain manufacturing items; the required quantity might be less than 25kg bag. However, if production staff have opened the bag for a production order and have consumed 10kg let's say; it makes sense for them to use the remaining quantity for other production order before opening another bag)

Standard NAV won't allow this; no matter how much extra raw materials are in PROD-IN bin, it will ask you to pick fresh from the main warehouse and not consume an already opened bag.

We have managed to get around this by customisation but I am curious if other clients/consultants have faced this scenario and how often does this occur. Is it important enough to be a feature of the new release of NAV?

Thanks for your thoughts

P.S. could we please have manufacturing as a category

    Ruby,

Why not create Assembly Picking Bins that are replenished from Bulk Stocking Bins. Then the Assembly Orders are all picked from the Assembly Bins only, which will always have ample stock for any Assembly Order and you do not have to over pick anything. You can run Replenishment Movement often to restock the Assembly Picking Bins.

    Just a thought.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Hi Steven,

    thank you for your answer!

Alas, i am still lost on how an assembly line can be replenished in a lean and sound manner. We have BOMS with ~100 items, and about ~500 item Nos. in assembly.

Adding and substracting lines manually is out of the question.

We want to pick full boxes and move them to the assembly line, based on consumption for all active assembly orders. Quantities that are "over-picked" have to remain in the line, and be considered when creating the next picking orders.

How would this be implemented in BC?

I am thinking about a simple card based KANBAN, but we would still need a pinking logic to select the rigt bin to ensure FIFO material flows.

Is there an Addon, that could be used?

I read in a couple of threads that this is done with customizations, but nobody gave examples or a little bit more detailed explanations. Could you give me an outline of how a customization could look like?

    Ruby,

Out-of-the-Box, sadly, their is no current tool to Over Pick, related to Production. I have taught customers to go into the Production Order Components to add additional quantities. I have also added Scrap Factor to allow for over pick and then added the inventory back during actual Consumption. I have also added a customization too.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    any updates on this?

we have the same issue at the moment:

    1. allow over-picking and moving bulk to production

    2. respect production-bin inventory when creating the picking order

Can't we do in the following manner?

    Consider

    Setting up 3 Warehouses

Warehouse 1, Warehouse 2 and Warehouse 3 (FG)

Raw material is stocked in Warehouse 1.

25 kg of item is transferred to Warehouse 2.

If only 23 kg is used for production, the materials are picked from Warehouse 2, 22 kg only.

Finished items moved to Warehouse 3....

Then unused items can be moved bcak to warehouse 1 again.

I've had this question from almost every customer that uses Warehouse Picks.

For example they use some thin foil for packaging and they always want to pick a complete roll - instead of cutting of 2m of foil in the warehouse which will be immediately unusable since it will attract dust etc.

And like you - we've been able to do this by using customization for every customer.

So: yes this would be a big help if this was in the standard NAV releases!
