How can I create one guide in multiple languages

Posted on by 10

Hi,

Our company has operators who needs the instructions in their own language. Is it possible to write Guides once and let the text be translated in multiple languages?

    Ton,

I understand completely what you want in terms of an structured XML environment workflow but that product doesn't exist yet (from anybody) based on my research. At least from a batch upload/change perspective in terms of the translations. (FYI, I would like it too)

And its not that Microsoft is not interested, its that Mixed Reality Team legit, doesn't understand or have ever worked with structured XML document environment with multiple translations.

But here is the thing, as I mentioned the backend of Guides is Azure/PowerPlatform and that potential to create an initial Guide and then on the backend load in the translations is there.

But I say potential because the Microsoft MR team would have to build out some capabilities/collaborate with some other Power Platform teams to create a translation flow that wasn't "tricked" out in complexity. (I actually think it can be done now to show a "tricked" out prototype but that is on my to do list)

So that leads us to "our" options. We can wait for Microsoft or somebody else to figure it out. Our if I am suggest reach out to @ryanN from Microsoft, he responded to your comment earlier in the thread. If you are willing to take the time show and explain, with an example, how a document works through a structured translation workflow, they will listen. Like i said its on my to do list to work with Microsoft on this issue but I have several things I am working on with them.  Plus, you get to put your stamp on building/improving a project.

my email is kcrawford@hunter.com if you want to keep me looped in and I can chime in to give a perspective if needed or wanted.

, thanks for the reply. Yes that is what we would like to do, ship HL2 devices around the world and use them in factories and Truck dealer workshops. Yes we use already an authoring and publication environment with structured text content in XML for Service Manuals and we use that also for the Online Realtime publication of the step by step instructions and that was also my idea to grab the instructions from there and show them beside the 3D MR/AR content in the HL for the operator / mechanic.

I posted already an Idea but there seems to be no interest for it neither by Microsoft or other Guides users.

I could imagine a setup where you have a branching step to pick a language, then that triggers a powerautomate flow which updates the text in the steps pulling from a spreadsheet as you suggest. Not super smooth both theoretically doable.

We don't want a "Tricked" and complex system where all kind of scripts have to ty it all up. The author should be able to write instructions, add the AR content and behind the scene the text should be translated in the desired languages. This is how we author service content already for thousands of end-users around the world on a daily basis.

    Hi Ton

I'm curious how you currently handle this with documents and powerpoints?

For the factories we have printed documents to train the employees with changes and instructors to teach new employees from scratch. But we want the instructions on a standard way in multiple languages. For service repairs or maintenance instructions we have the instructions in multiple languages as step by step (printed or on a screen) as I wrote in earlier replies. But there we want to display the AR content on top of the working area together with the language specific instructions.

RE: How can I create one guide in multiple languages

    @Ton Willems,

So lets start with a bigger issue which is at the device level where the Microsoft Hololens is sold in regions around the world. So saying we are going to buy XXX of HL2 in the US and distribute them around the world to work first has to be evaluated since this will effect what ever software you plan to use.

The second issue, and I will be curious about what you find, is that any "Guides" like program will would require some sort of XML (or other) direct word replacement from one language to another.

I make operations, install manuals, and service manuals for 18 languages world wide.  There are plenty of XML programs already developed to both translate and then output that information into HTML or PDF etc., which is what I am assuming your a doing. And if your doing your structured documents correct you have topics/components that have already been translated and then you probably never touch those translation again because they don't change.

So with the way Guides is going, there may be a way in the nearish future to map out the language of what is in a Guide. You would do this in say excel: Row 1: "This is an instruction" with each column having the comparable translation (just being super basic here). Map out an entire Guide in terms of the verbiage. Then use the PowerApp interface for Guides to create/replace the language of a Guide to its comparable language. (@davePinch and @RyanNadel you may look at this a way to improve in the future)

Sharing the translated Guide and make that translation interface can definitely be improved but Microsoft does listen

It seems that Guides is only usable in regions with one language speaking users and not for multinational Global companies with many different languages in their audience. So for us it will be a no go for new initiatives. The authoring work will be to much and will exceed the needed time for learning in person.

if you really need multi-language support, you may want to check Inspect AR
