Why does a fixed asset journal sometimes take much longer than other times

I have a fixed asset journal of about 5000 entries.   It is a depreciation journal and is ran each month during our closing.   Most months it runs about 15-20 minutes, but some months it spikes up to 2.5 hours.   We can see no servers that are running unusually high levels of activity during those times.
