AOS service failed to start with code 100

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello Everyone.

We have an old system AX2009 which has old data of previous years. This system is no longer operational. Its only purpose is to retrive old data when needed during a tax audit.

We had the AOS installation on a machine and the database was residing in the same DB instance of our current AX2012 database machine. We faced a failure in the database machine so we restored latest backups of AX2012 databases and restored the unchanged database of AX2009 too. Ax2012 is worked fine without any issues, however the AX2009 AOS service did not start.

The error code given was code:100 and event viewer showed the following error:

Object Server 02: SQL diagnostics: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified. Connect information was: Userid = [], Database = [DynAX2009_Wahba_DB], Server = [AX2009_BACKUPSS], DSN = [], Other = []

For the purpose of trouble shooting, we installed SQL2012 on the same machine as AX2009 AOS. Restored the database and we are facing the same issue. We made sure that the server config of Ax2009 AOS is pointing to the correct DB.

Does the AX2009 AOS service require ODBC connection to perform some tasks? We tried setting up ODBC (32bit and 64bit) still no effect.

Can anyone help in what could be the problem.

We found one thread having similar case, but the resolution there was a fresh installation of SQL and AX2009. We cannot perform such a task as our team has no knowledge of AX2009 installation also the previous teams have left no documentation of what version of AX2009 was setup and what customizations were carried out.

Any guidance will be appreciated.

We couldn't reach to a solution. So we started a fresh installation and applied the rollups and restored the database and files. the service started but some items were not visible in the system.

In the end we got a hold of a working AX2009 environment from a consultant with rollup 8. We just restored database and files and very thing was working fine and all data was available.

We have no idea what went wrong in our fresh install, may be made a wrong configuration while setting up the rollups or something.

For now we are ok since the data is there and accessible. Hope thins might help someone in the future.

RE: AX2009 AOS service failed to start with code 100.

After the database machine failure, we had to format the machine and reinstall Sql2012.

By unchanged database I mean that we restored the normal db backup.

I added unchanged to specify that this database has not been modified since 2013 in terms of transaction or configurations within the Db.

Note we have restored AX2009 Db on fresh sql2012 installation before without any issues before.

I agree with you that simply restoring does not break things. However this error is the case right now.

After the database machine failure, did you do something - such as install new SQL Server - before restoring the db backups? Simply restoring a backup should not break things like you describe.

What do you mean by "restoring unchanged AX2009 database"? Does this mean something else than restoring from backup?
