Ledger Reconciliation - WIP Report Deviation

ReportReport

Hi Community,

I have questions about ledger reconciliation - WIP report under the project management and accounting module in D365. The question is that the report is showing me a deviation balance of 314.07. The voucher is the same, the only difference 233.57 transaction has 2 dimensions, whereas the 90.50 has 4 dimensions. Account wise, there is a difference. And on the WIP report, we don't have the dimension filter. How to resolve this deviation? I am going to communicate to the client that if the voucher had an offset account as a project, then there will be no deviation.

the deviation is a reporting presentation issue, not a financial corruption — your GL and project subledger are actually in balance. The WIP reconciliation report does a strict line-by-line join using LedgerDimension, which in D365 is not just the main account number but the unique combination of main account plus financial dimensions. When the same voucher has lines with different dimension combinations — your 233.57 with 2 dimensions and 90.50 with 4 dimensions — the join breaks within that voucher grouping and the report throws the unmatched amounts into the Deviation column even though the money is correctly posted.

On the offset account point — changing the offset account type to Project will not fix this and will actually create a second subledger transaction moving costs between projects. The offset should stay as a Ledger account type.

For the existing posted voucher — you don't need to reverse it. Confirm your Trial Balance WIP main account total matches your Project Subledger WIP total and your financials are clean. The line-level deviation on that specific voucher is a reporting artefact.

To prevent this going forward — go to General ledger → Journal setup → Journal names → select the journal name used for these project transactions → General FastTab → change the New voucher parameter to In connection with balance. This forces a new voucher number every time the financial dimension combination changes, giving the WIP report a perfect 1:1 LedgerDimension match and dropping deviations to zero.

Hope that helps — feel free to mark as verified if it resolves the issue.
