Product Variant / Product Dimensions

We have usurped the Color field for a "home grown" product dimension called Capital Project.  I can go into PIM/Setup/Product Dimensions/Capital Projects Master Table and fill in new capital projects.  I can go into product masters and pull up an item.  I can go to the tab Product Master/Product Dimensions and the new item does not show up.  I can go into Product Master / Product Variants and it does now show there either.  I tried checking the "General variants automatically" but when I close the window with it checked it becomes unchecked.   Not sure how I can get this new product dimension value (in place of color) to show up.

There is only one product dimension group that we use on all items.

RE: Product Variant / Product Dimensions

    Hi,

I am newbie in Dynamics AX,

Need to know, is there any option to define color for the product (not product master) which already been released without making any product dimension active and variant released which is not possible as its not master I mentioned.

    Pls lemme know.

    thanks in advance

    OK, I see.

Tried it on my build - works just fine.

Adding another color allows me to later select it from the lookup when adding product colors, for both new and existing product masters.

I just looked at the code - the lookup there is very simply - it just looks at the data from the EcoResColor table - can you open the Table browser for that table and check that your newly added color is in fact there?

Do you have any code customizations around product masters?

Don't go into product variants, as they are derivatives from the product dimensions, so anything that you do not see in product dimensions would also not show up in product variants.

RE: Product Variant / Product Dimensions

Sorry.  Let me try to explain using color, back to the original example.   I have a product dimension, color, that contains [Red, Blue, Green, White].  Color contains four options.  So let's take out the dimension group for the moment.  Suffice it to say we have only one product dimension, Color and one dimension group that includes Color.  No other product dimensions or dimension groups exist.

I create a product [product 123] and within that product I can hit Product Master > Product Dimensions.  I now have a list of 4 products that I can include on the product dimension list [Red, Blue, Green. White].  I choose all 4 as they are all valid.

Now I come along a year later (where I am right now) and I want to add Purple to the list of colors.  I add purple to the production dimension color.  If I create a new product [product 999] , I will have the option of [Red, Blue, Green White, Purple].  That isn't an issue.   But now if I want to go back to the old product [product 123] and add Purple, I cannot do that using the dropdown after I hit NEW.  I am able to hit NEW and a line opens up but the dropdown that lists the product dimension color is not populated.  I can physically type something in the field but that has to be bad practice to have to do that to all existing products.

Another thing I've noticed is that I can go into Product Variants and hit Variant Suggestions and it will recommend any of the old values, but even there Purple is not an option.   It is as if Purple does not exist for any of the products created before Purple was added to the list.

Besides trying to get this to populate in product dimensions I have tried product variants -- figuring maybe that would do the trick -- but see the same behavior.   I have tried checking the "Generate variants automatically" but that does nothing and when I reload the form it is unchecked.

I know, confusing......and quite frustrating.  All I need to do is add Purple to the list of allow dimensions for all products.  It shouldn't be this hard.

Man you have a nice way of explaining things... whaat? :)

Let me see if I got what you were saying.

    There's 2 things:

    - A general list of a particular product dimension, in your case, capital projects.

    - A product-specific list of a particular product dimension, that are applicable for this particular product. For example, if I use the color as an example, product A can be of colors "Blue, Black and Red", while product B can also be of color "White".

So the first list would contain 4 colors, while the second would be different depending on the product.

Therefore, adding a new color(read, capital project) to the first list does not automatically propagate it to all the product-specific lists, since it's not necessary it applies to that product.

Now, as a side topic - I think you are confusing the terms a bit.

A product dimension group is a setting that controls, which of the product dimensions are applicable for a product master. Whether a product master is actually described by color, or size, or only configuration. It has nothing to do with the actual dimension values applicable for that product.

RE: Product Variant / Product Dimensions

I made a nice diagram of the breakdown but I guess we can't upload documents.   Here is what I think.

I can go in and create a capital project.  That capital project is part of a product dimension group as it is checked in that setup.   The product master/product have that dimension group assigned.  I found out that if I create a new product master/product the capital projects all show up fine.  But anything already created does not update as I update the capital projects via the product dimension group.

Maybe I'm making an assumption but it appears that once a product uses the product dimension group to see current capital projects (which is using the AX "color" field) it retains those capital projects and does not update as the data in the product dimension group updates.  Clear as mud?

    Hi Brian,

This solved your problem or do you have additional questions?

yes.  I can go to Product Master > Product Dimension and hit NEW and create a new Cap Proj.

    Hi Brian,

Within the Product Master > Product dimensions you can create a new "Capital project".
