MEM vs Multiple Databases

(0) ShareShare

Posted on by

I work for a company which has a parent & subsidiary structure. They use Multi Entity Management by Binary Stream to have all of the major companies housed within the same database and accessible by a single login on GP. One of the subsidiaries owns some of its own companies and has opted to place those in separate databases accessible by a separate login to GP.

Which system is ideal?

One advantage I have seen to separate databases is a reduction in complexity. MEM makes things complicated, especially when attempting to integrate additional third party modules like EDI.

One advantage I have seen to a single database with MEM is less complexity in reporting. It can be easier to develop queries from a single database, especially when using SSRS.

I think you've hit on some of the difficulties inherent to Multi Entity Management. There are a few more, like having to use the same fiscal period setup for all entities.

On the other hand, logging out of one company and into another can be frustrating to users. This is heightened if third party software loads slow this process.

It is possible to use multiple companies and Nolan InterCompany postings to address the specific issues inherent to MEM and Standard GP Multi Company processing.

In the end, it comes down to what specific limitations are the biggest challenge to your organization(s).

In the next couple of months, we are releasing a new MEM module that will remove the fiscal period and functional currency limitations inherent in GP today (just to clarify, these are not MEM limitations, but are caused by the SQL database structure). While we can't change the way SQL is designed, our enhanced intercompany bridge will make life much easier for companies that must have differnt fiscal periods and / or different functional currencies. Contact me for more info. I'd like more information on your EDI difficulties...perhaps we have a solution for you, or could work on one going forward.
