Folks, I'm trying to understand the difference between 2 GDPR fields. Can anyone help, please?
These fields seem to me to be ambiguous. If a series of customers set ["DoNotBulkEMail" = "Do Not Allow"] (ie the DON’T want Marketing Mails) and set ["DoNotSendMM" = "Allow"] (ie they DO want brochures), well how do you send them brochures other than in a Marketing Mail? But they said they don’t want Marketing Mail. So the choices can be set to contradict each other.
Also, couldn’t you exploit this? Couldn't I just send them marketing mails but with a brochure attached to it? So I've worked round their choices not to get marketing emails by simply attaching a brochure to the email? [I don't intend to do this, I'm just trying to illustrate that this fields seem ambiguous and could be result in a GDPR violation].
Can anyone clarify, please? I'm confused. I’ve clearly not understood the purpose of these fields correctly.
Thanks for everyone for their contributions. Much appreciated.
I would agree mkirkpatrick. The main difference between the two fields though is that one 'does something' and the other is open to interpretation. DoNotSendMM has no baring in the system when it comes to D365 Marketing and won't prevent you from sending out email communication to Contacts even if DoNotSendMM is set to Do Not Send.
Just by the examples provided, one could also interpret "Marketing Materials" as traditional direct mail. When they cite brochures and catalogs, I tend to think of those as being printed pieces. I'm more familiar with the consent settings in Fundraising & Engagement where they have a "Do No allow Mail" (separately from phone, email, text, etc) - maybe it's similar?
See Megan Walker's answer below.
The DoNotSendMM has no influence at all with regards to the D365 Marketing App and functionality. Although you could use it when building out a segment, it wouldn't prevent or dictate emails being sent out. DoNotBulkEMail is the field that would prevent an email from going to someone if it was set to Do Not Allow.
The only time the DoNotBulkEMail field is ignored, would be if you send out an email and have it set as a Transactional email rather than a Commercial email.
So, if you have used this field previously and users and updating the DoNotSendMM field thinking it will do 'something' might need to retrain them, or make sure you are religiously using it in your segments to filter people in or out before sending them on a Journey.
Hi MikeBMikeBMikeB,
My understanding is that
contacts can opt out of receiving subsequent marketing emails when they receive the first marketing email,
which effectively prevents them from being interrupted.
The latter option simply indicates that the contact is not interested in the current event and that they will continue to wait for a follow-up event.
