I would to be able to add an adhoc free text note to appear on an individual Sales invoice.
Is there a standard place to enter this text? can it be entered on the Sales Order?

Have you tried using document notes for this purpose and include it on your sales order invoice document?
Via the AR form setup you should be able to get them printed on your invoice.

You are probably aware, but would the attachments functionality be suffice on the sales order?
Then from here you can include some free text information via attachment type 'note':
This sales order line should now have a highlighted attachments field when looking at it from the list pane, however user will have to dig into the attachments to see the note atatchedHope this was of some help!
Thomas I require this text to appear on the printed invoice for the customer to read
at present the Item description is prefilled in this field is there anyway to set this blank?
I am currently using the document notes field on the sales header for delivery note extra information to appear on the paper work:(
