Plan/Schedule to Apply Cumulative Updates in Dynamics 365 On-Prem

Does anyone have a best practices schedule/plan for updating/upgrading Dynamics 365 on-premise?  We are on Microsoft Dynamics 365 (on premises) Update 0.17, June 2020, 9.0.17.8.  I would like to put a plan in place that will include reviewing the details of the update, scheduling the update in DEV, testing the update, and then releasing it to production.  That is my plan but wondering if someone has a schedule or best practice they follow.

Thank you.

    Hello jdalske,

    Hope you are well.

From a high level point, its as simple as you described (DEV-update-test-deployprod)

Can we get more details on your concerns so we can try to add more value here?

    Standard documentation:

I am well and I hope this finds you the same.

The link you provided was helpful.  It seemed to focus more on an upgrade/migration from 2016 to 365 which we have already done. I liked how it included the import of the new organizations.  However, would this be a step when running a cumulative update?   I suppose what I am looking for would be an outline that would help me create a resource document or plan that includes the steps or potential action items of applying and testing the cumulative updates in phases.  I was hoping that someone might have a best practices document that I could modify to fit our needs.  Again the link you shared will be helpful in creating my own.  Below are my thoughts on steps.

Review what is in the new update from a specific site. Next Access the update and information from here (support.microsoft.com/.../microsoft-dynamics-365-on-premises-cumulative-updates-ed51f905-cf4e-3641-dc7c-afe2b868eeb9).  Steps to download, install, and apply new features in DEV.  Refresh the Organization if necessary after a cumulative update (I don't know that this is needed but that would be a question). Test current and new features.  Rollback or remove any features not necessary along with the steps on how to do it before applying updates to PROD with same process.

Perhaps talking it out and getting input has helped me get the foundation for  creating a Best Practices/Plan/Resource Document.

    Thank you :)

What would you recommend?  Would I apply a cumulative update or is it best to apply them in incremental steps?  For example, should I apply 9.0.18.12 or skip a few and apply them skipping a few until I reach the latest 9.0 update (9.0.34.5).  Or install that 9.0.34.5 update since it has been out since last month and I don't plan to apply it until next month.  Or do I ignore all the missed updates for 9.0 and go to 9.1.1.914?  Just looking for the best process/plan of action to get caught up and stay on track.

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Hello Jdalske,

Updates within the same major version are cumulative as they are not depending on any previous update. So you can jump as big as you like.

That is even more important for scenario where some patches do contain bottlenecks on upgrading orgs, and that would be fixed on higher builds. You can also ignore the missed updates and go directly to v9.1. You refer v9.1.1.914 but we dont really reccomend you to go there. You should upgrade directly the org instead to v9.1.6 as there are critical updates throughout v9.1 builds.

One more question for clarification, you say they are cumulative so I could go from v 9.0 to v9.1.6 but in the documentation for v9.1.6 it says the system requirement is to have v9.1.   Is that a recommendation or mistake in the documentation?  Either way, plan has been put together and I will be starting later this morning.   I think I'll go to v9.1 then spot test and jump to v9.1.6 and do further testing for about a month.  Thank you for all you help!

    Hello Jdalske,

    Where do you see that?

I'm checking right now and we have multiple options on the system requirements:

    - System Requirements

    Supported Operating System

    Windows Server 2016

This update must be installed on a computer that is running Dynamics 365 Server, v9.1 (on-premises), or Dynamics 365 Reporting Extensions, v9.1 (on-premises).

As you are starting the process, please be aware that v9.1.7 was just released this week:

    support.microsoft.com/.../service-update-1-7-for-microsoft-dynamics-crm-on-premises-9-1-f2496aae-72bc-4dd4-987f-448bce5dd1b9

Yes that is exactly what I was seeing and interpreted that all those were required not that it was an OR.  Thank you for clarifying.  I will update to v9.1.6 and plan v9.1.7 next quarter.  Thank you!!
