Duplicate Environment Using Database From SSMS

Hi,

I have little doubt regarding duplicating VM's database. In AX 2012 we were used to export database and import it to required environment with some modifications. Is it possible to do same on AX 7? Please provide if there is any link available for reference. I have tried to find but I think this way no one has still tried to make new environment.

Regards,

Smit

What exactly are you trying to achieve? Do you want to copy both code and data? Which type of environments are you talking about (single-box DEV, production or so)?

Yes I want both code as well as data. Both environment are for testing purpose only just to check possibility to access successfully if we take back up of database and restore it in second VM.

    Hi Smit,

It's possible to restore DB from DEV to TEST or vise versa to get copy of data not code.

You can't handle code via SSMS, because it's not in database at all. The application is compiled to DLL (and other) files on disk.

What kind of code would you like to copy? The standard application? Don't do that; simply install the right version.

Your customizations? If you want to source code for some reason, use either TFS or model export. If not, install the same deployable package you put into your source system.

Note that source code (before compilation) is just a bunch of XML files, so you technically can work directly with them. But if your environments are for testing, you're probably interested in the compiled application and not source files.

Okay I got some clarity. Let me modify my question. As per your answers if I am going to restore data base my code changes will not move to another environment. But my table definitions and table fields will come as per back up data bases.

    1. Is it good practice to restore data bases if we have huge amount of data and no customizations at all involved? (Both are fresh instance but some additional data is there in one environment)

    2. If there are customizations in one instance and second is fresh. Now I am doing restore in that case I have to find my code changes manually. (Because tables will come automatically while restoring. Anything else we have to include?)

    3. If customizations are in both machines with code and all (everything is available) ,for the data purpose just only I restore then what issues can  be there?

    1. You can use data bse backup and restore to move data between dev and test environemnts.

    2. You need to use version control system to sync code changes between enviroenmtns or deploy a deployable package to bring new code.

    3. You should not have any issues.
