Can't see the Tracing tab on AX 2012 Server configuration utility

Hi All,

I am trying to setup Dynamics AX performance analyzer tool for AX 2012 in order to evaluate AX system and database performance. In one of the setup steps, following statement is written in the user guide:

"Ensure that every active AOS server in the AX instance has been started with the Allow client tracing on Application Object Server instance’ checkbox enabled". The same is mentioned in the below mentioned blog which shows the Tracing tab under AX configuration utility:

blogs.msdn.com/.../dynamics-ax-tracing-part-1.aspx

When I open AX 2012 Server configuration utility on my VM, I can't see the Tracing tab there. Is there any option which should be enable to have the Tracing tab showing on AX server configuration utility or am I missing something?

Please validate if you have installed 'Trace Parser' tools while intalling dynamics AX

When you install Dynamics AX in Custom installation wizard you will find the option to install 'Trace Parser'

Please verify and may be its installation will be required to have that Tab on the Dynamics AX Server configuration utility

    Please update with your findings

Thanks for your response Nitesh. I have not installed Trace Parcer in my AX 2012 installation. Can I install Trace Parcer in current AX 2012 installation without running AX setup? I can see the Tracing Cockpit option under Tools and it is asking me to create the Database. Is it the same setup that you are talking about?

    Hi Syed,

The blog link you've got there is using AX2009. And I think the tracing tab no longer exists for AX2012.

One of the comment in the link below confirmed that there's no need to set that flag when using Dynamics Performance Analyzer with AX2012.

    Kind regards,

Thanks Dominic. Yes I just saw that in the link you provided it is mentioned that it is no longer required to set tracing options as it is available out of the box.

You can use the Tracing functionality from within the Developer Workspace in AX 2012 by doing the following:

    1. Open a Developer Workspace by pressing Ctrl-D or choosing the New Development Workspace from the windows button in the upper right of the AX 2012 toolbar.

    2. Go to Tools - Tracing Cockpit

    3. Usually the default options set on the window are fine, but you can change them if you want.

    4. Have your process ready to be started from within the client, preferably running through it once to "warm up" the process. Then go to the Tracing Cockpit and simply press Start Trace.

    5. Give it a file name on a share with enough drive space, perform your task to be traced and then come back to the Tracing Cockpit and choose Stop Trace.

    6. Then you can choose the Open Trace button to launch that specific trace into the Trace Parser application.

    Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your detail response. Yes I did saw the Tracing cockpit under development workspace in AX 2012, but I thought that perhaps Dynamics AX Performance analyzer can provide more detail insight on performance issues so I decided to try that. Anyways, I tried the steps you mentioned above and created a new database for TraceParser. I just ran a sample scenario where I open the vendor master form and the following information is showing in Trace Parser:

Can you please let me know how I can determine from the above information that if there are any performance issues or there are more RPC for any method call than standard. What is the method to determine these kind of things by looking at the trace information?

    Thanks,

    SB.
