Hi:

As things stand now, we have a dozen work centers for our one routing in manufacturing within Business Central.

Unfortunately, the Accounting department wants to tie and track six overhead accounts from the chart of accounts to each work center.

Is that even possible?

We would hate to have to create additional work centers or machine centers, just to account for overhead on the backend in the general ledger.

I assume accounting wants things like "Supervisor Overheads" and "Facility Overheads" etc as accounts associated?

The short answer is no - you can't do that. Maybe in a 5M ERP like SAP or Oracle you can - but not in BC.

The long answer is don't even customize it to do this. That will be a nightmare of maintenance. They could add User Fields in Machine / Work Centers and then use sub-ledger reports to show them the break out of the overheads - but just leave it all compressed in the G/L.

Hi Rob:

How would you "add User Fields in Machine / Work Centers and subledger reports to show the break out of the overheads"? I don't see a way of doing so, but it's probably just my ignorance. :)

Merry Christmas John!

Rereading my answer where I say "don't even customize to do this" I realize that in the next breath I suggest a customization.

Let me restate:

1) Do not try and customize to add extra GL accounts for breaking out these overheads on posting your Production output journal or Finishing the production order.

2) Rather - add the fields you want to the Machine or Work Center cards with a very small and light customization, then either copy the values to the production order routing rows and create a Power BI or other simple report to report on it - or if you don't need history just generate the report from the custom fields on the card.

Both of these would require AL customization.

Customization 1) is $20,000 and customization 2) should be $500 to $2000.

There is an ISV addon from EFOQUS that allows you to add the user fields yourself - not sure what the price is.

I've also seen this done with a monthly report and single journal entry.
